Lightweight Solutions - Building Lighter

22 August 2023

New material solutions are one of the keys to modern construction. High-tech fibres and composite materials can be adapted to the increasing requirements of specific projects by combining several functions in one material. Resource-efficient lightweight construction materials offer answers to energy and ecological challenges. Materials that are already being used successfully in other engineering disciplines are increasingly being used in the construction industry. Learn how the enormous consumption of reinforced concrete can be reduced.

Lightweight construction becomes tangible

Lightweight construction uses materials that combine high strength with low weight. In the material exhibition Lightweight.Construction, which will once again be curated and developed by raumprobe in the proven tradition, selected material samples and special exhibits will show contemporary optimisations of materials and constructions. Lightweight.Construction becomes tangible.

The special show is about more than just weight reduction. In addition to ultra-light composite materials, interactive stations and experiments invite visitors to try them out. The exhibition is designed as a world of learning and experience that also draws attention to lightweight, low-complexity products and systems. In this way, the special show makes it possible to experience the lightweight construction of today and tomorrow.

Multi-material design

Lightweight design can help to make components and constructions lighter and thus save resources. In addition, materials can help components become stronger and safer due to their high strength and stiffness. Another advantage of composites is that they are often easier and more cost-efficient to produce than conventional materials such as steel or aluminium. However, they also have some disadvantages, such as being more difficult to recycle compared to metals. For future construction tasks, it is accordingly a matter of multi-material design. This requires close interdisciplinary cooperation between architecture, design, construction, material science and production to find the optimal combination of materials and to solve the challenges of combining the different materials. You may be curious to see what building materials are already available in this sector today, which will literally make the building of today and tomorrow easier.
